I agree the with the idea of playing with the cliches. Also I believe I like rats is because they seem to hold a certain ugly truth about them. Going through a few of the stories that I've read and movies that I've watched rat characters always come off as cynically humored.
They don't believe in such things as good or evil but rather survival.
Now although in some stories this type of cynicism is frowned on but I see truth to it.
A sewer rat although by some unsightly will survive situations humans will not.

I don't really know why I like rats. I wonder myself. Maybe because "Ratman's Notebook" and "Der Mond hinter den Scheunen" where among the first books I ever read by myself. But it's the same with hyenas (I just can't draw them, so I write a lot about them), so I guess I have no explanation. It's just a sympathy and a play and fight with chlichés.

Hey Levthan, Nice work , I've noticed that you draw alot of Rats/Wererats. Any special reasons for them being a favorite?, I'm just curious, I'm a Rat fan myself.
